things that made me happy this week.
+ wearing laura mercier tinted moisturizer - illuminating. i've been a big fan of laura mercier for some time now, but i just recently tried the illuminating kind and i'm in love! it's glowy and golden and sheer-but-not-too-sheer. plus it has spf 20 which i have to wear every day. holla!
+ dinner with my bestest g-fries at butterfly sushi & thai. it started to hail golf ball-sized hail in the middle of dinner, but we had four bottles of wine to share so we we didn't mind waiting out the weather.
+ this byzantine necklace by need supply. i want!
+ a classic blue line / forever yogurt date with the hubs. i made myself a cake batter yogurt and topped it with peanuts, reese pieces, brownie bites, and hot fudge. we snagged a table outside too. baller!
+ we finnnnallllyyy got the first disc of true blood season 3 from netflix. yes, yes, we're a season behind.
+ the hubs started a new jobby job today at a schmancy school on the south side.
+ drinking sergio prosecco (bought at costco -- i am a proud new member!) while watching old episodes of the kardashians. (why, why, why, do i love them so?)
lots more happiness on the way this [long!] weekend.
xoxo!
curing the blahs, one crazy genius at a time.
sometimes i get really stressed out and bummed and blaaaaahhhhhh. but then! then a coworker will show me a picture of richard stallman playing the recorder to a butterfly, and i'll basically melt with happiness because how is this not the best thing anyone has ever seen ever?
finally!
i've been wanting a photo collage on my wall for approximately 1.5 million years. so i finally got my act together and bought all the frames, printed out the pictures, put the pictures in the frames, windexed all the glass, mapped out the collage, and convinced the hubs to nail it all to the wall...
...and i'm in love!
i wanted a collage of our family and friends laughing and dancing and having fun or just totally looking happy, and that's exactly what we made.
i'm excited to wake up to this every day. it makes our apartment feel like a home, and i love living here even more than i did before. {if that's even possible.}
major props to the hubs who actually did the manual labor involved in getting this on the wall. {give me a hammer and nails and i'll look at you and say, "HUH?" i'm basically worthless in that regard.}

here's a lovely little flowchart for happiness.
found on flowingdata.com, a site i recently found and totally love.
because i am a dork.
happy words
"Throw away those lamentations, we both know them all too well.
If there's a book of jubilations, we'll have to write it for ourselves."

the peas are all right
i've been super stressy lately. and it's sort of leading to unhealthy behaviors. so. in an attempt to check myself before i wreck myself, i made a list of things to be happy about.
here are just a few of the things i wrote down:
cupcakes for breakfast
listening to my hubs sing in the shower
bulldogs
stamps
wine glasses
bobby pins
nesting tables
yarn
chalkboards
pretty paper
calenders
plaid
station wagons
chips and salsa
vintage fans
cuckoo clocks
maps
frye boots
etsy
cozy afghans
confidence
BBQs
whoppie pies
snuggling
express trains
fall
dinner dates
lists
28 things because i am 28.
also because i could probably go on and on so some sort of cut off point is needed.
here's to a happy week!
fantasy day off
since i worked a couple weekend days recently, i randomly have today off work! huzzah!
if you had an unexpected day off to do whatever in the world your heart desired, what would you do?
here's my fantasy day off (keep in mind that teleportation and time travel is totally OK in a fantasy day off):
sleep in
cuddle with the hubs
cuddle with freddie
egg whites and cheese on whole wheat toast from my fave NYC deli on 5th and broadway
thrift store shopping
read Jane magazine on a sunny beach in Phuket
60 minute massage
champagne in a spa robe (after the massage)
dinner on a boat on lake michigan with the hubs
fireworks
gelato
movie at home on the couch
zzzzzz's
something tells me i won't be able to accomplish most of the things on this list.
sadly, Jane magazine has been dunzo for a while now and getting from chicago to Phuket means a 13 hour flight to Tokyo and then a 6 hour flight to Bangkok and then a one hour flight to Phuket and well...that takes mental preparation. and more than one fantasy day off.
but! i'm spending the day with jillian which means whatever we do will be totally awesome sauce.
{but i REALLY miss Jane magazine for reals!}
you better Belize it
i used to love airports.
when i was little, going to the airport meant going to dinsey world. as i got older, going to the airport meant a school trip to london, a family vacation, college visits. it meant packing bathing suits and eating junk food from the food court. it meant trashy magazines and bubble gum. and going to the airport was fun in the same way that getting ready for any special event was fun -- the anticipation was part of the adventure.
when i went away to college, i chose a school that was almost 1,000 miles from home. airports were exciting because they were just a small stop between two very different lives. and when i chose to study abroad in south africa, the airport was a place to collect myself and think about what i was about to do and later, what i had just done.
and then i started working. having {some} disposable income of my very own meant that i could go the airport any old time i wanted. so i did. i visited friends from home in boston. i went to london for the weekend. i went to thailand with some work friends...a year later we went to kenya and tanzania.
then i got promoted. and i started traveling for work. and all of a sudden, airports meant traffic on the way there and traffic on the way back. airports meant squeezing my liquids into ziploc bags, and sitting on the tarmac for three hours. airports took me away from the people i loved. they meant another night alone in a hotel room. they meant delays and cancellations. they meant power point presentations and expense reports.
i haven't taken a nice, fun trip in a few years. i guess i've been feeling pretty burnt out on work travel, and of course i've been lacking some of the things necessary to take a nice vacation like "money" and "vacation days."
but it sort of makes me sad that i gave up trying...that i gave up even dreaming about places i'd like to see. because there used to be a time when you could ask me where i'd like to go next and i could rattle off a list of 15 different options. and lately when people have been asking about where jim and i would honeymoon, i've been all, "i don't know. maybe we'll go somewhere later. maybe we'll just come back here and work."
ummm...who am i?
i think my sense of adventure is a big part of what makes me me. and i want it back.
so fuck it. it might be the worst possible time to take a vacation as far as work is concerned {is there really ever a good time for vacation?}, but we're going on a honeymoon.
YOU BETTA BELIZE IT!!!!

christmas tea party
a holiday is not a holiday...
...without mounds of mashed potatoes...
...and freaking awesome people.
it's science.
news.
jim and i are trading in our big apple for some deep dish pizza.
and by this i mean we are moving to Chicago!
to be more specific, we are moving to Chicago's super cute, super fun, super hip, Bucktown neighborhood.

Our new, cozy little 2 bedroom apartment is vintage-y and adorable with gorgeous arches, tile work, original 1950's kitchen cabinets, and dark wood molding.
i'm pretty much obsessed with it. and i'm so happy i could burst.
The annual Boiler Up!
even though i live kinda far away, i try to make it back to Purdue for at least one football game every year.
any by "football game" i mean "tailgate." i try to tailgate once a year.
i went to west lafayette last weekend (not this past weekend, but the weekend before. sheesh i am behind!) and it was sunny and 70 degrees and beautiful.
and it's ok that we didn't win the game because...

...i think we won the tailgate.
sweet home chicago!
this morning as i was walking to the F train, i reached into my wallet to pull out my NYC metro card and accidentally pulled out my chicago MTA card instead. i almost cried.
i love chicago. if you've read through my archives circa May/June 2008 then you know my job moved me from chicago to new york and it was a super sad time for me. i left behind a freaking amazing city and even more amazing friends. (stupid "employment"...)
anyway! i got to spend this past weekend in chicago/indiana with my besties. and it was awesome.

actually it was like...fall-down-face-first-on-the-cement-and-pee-yourself-laughing awesome. (this may or may not have literally happened.)
second city? i think NOT.
P.S. please excuse the fugliness that is ME in the photo above which was taken on friday night/saturady morning. i was up at 4:30 am to catch my flight on friday morning and you know there's just a point when the pretty melts away...usually around the 2nd bottle of wine, but maybe before...no one knows for sure and everyone looks better after the 3rd bottle so...
i heart visitors!
on saturday morning, before jim's big surprise party, we met up with a couple of my friends at The Park for brunch.
thanks for playing with us, julie and becca!
happy...
i heart visitors
i'm not sure how i got so lucky, but all of a sudden there have been lots of fun visitors for me to to play with in new york.
last weekend when she was done moving her brother into the NYU dorms, rosie (a.k.a. pledge master) came over to brooklyn to hang out with little old me.

she treated jim and me to dinner (which is seriously so nice and totally not necessary, rosie!!!!) while we drilled her with all our pilot-related questions. (she's a pilot. she calls the cockpit a "box office." lovessss it.)
this past weekend, bryan and his friend burke came to town.

don't they just look like they're fun? they are.
(poor burke suffered the same sort of work related questions as rosie. except he's a dentist so it was more like, "WILL YOU LOOK INSIDE MY MOUTH?" i kid. but i did feel the need to tell him multiple times that i went to see the dentist this year.)
we went to dinner at a vegan restaurant in chelsea where i ate this for dessert:

it's vegan chocolate ganache with vanilla soy ice cream and a peanut butter drizzle. (i sort of wish this was in my mouth right now.) oh and uh, the dinner entree was excellent as well.
i wore something sort of ridiculous to dinner.

but i ask you... if a girl can't wear her harem pants out to a vegan restaurant with her gay friends than where can she?
