cupcaking

i went to Magnolia Bakery (first time!) last night to meet an old friend and catch up over cupcakes.

(if the name sounds vaguely familiar to you it's because Magnolia is the place Carrie Bradshaw made famous in 2000 which then kicked off a big cupcake craze which, according to the New York Times, has spread to the Middle East. viva la cupcake!)

i had a vanilla cupcake with chocolate buttercream frosting.

(there are two because i had to bring one home for my fiance. awwwww)

my friend went a different route and got the mini red velvet cheesecake.

and you know what? we weren't that impressed! i mean...the cakes were good. (let's be honest...anything frosted is good.) but they weren't that good. i think it was the frosting...i don't think i'm a buttercream kind of girl so much as a "this is so sweet i think my back molars just fell out and i've developed type 2 diabetes" sort of girl.

so i think i need to find my most favorite cupcake in all of NYC.

possible stops on the tour will include:

Magnolia Bakery (been, obv, but we shall go for my cupcake tasting teammates)
Crumbs Bake Shop
Buttercup Bake Shop
Cupcake Cafe (Sharon, have you and i already been here? i forget.)
Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery
Polka Dot Cake Studio

who's with me?

I agree. Magnolia isn't that good. The best cupcake I've had in the city was from Martha's Bakery in Astoria. Amazing.

NY Mag rated the best cupcakes in the city too. I know there is one spot that's in Cobble Hill.

i was just thinking how fancy cupcakes actually aren't really my fav.

it's so ghetto, but i really love a cupcake-from-cake-mix with canned frosting. i can eat like 12 of those in a row. or maybe i'm just pregnant.

Oooo I want to try the place Kelley suggested! I like Magnolia cupcakes, but I think I like anything sweet :) I haven't had Crumbs... the one time I stopped there to get cupcakes they had very few options, but mostly empty shelves... Not sure why.

Michaela! The BEST cupcakes are at Sugar Sweet Sunshine on Rivington. Get your hot little hands on a Bob cupcake, which is chocolate cake with hazelnut frosting. It is the ultimate, my favorite ever. Have one extra for me, please! Crumbs is also another good place.

I'm in - I'll fly in next weekend. :)

Seriously, I'm jealous that you have THAT many cupcake places around town to enjoy. We have one that is about 45 minutes from my home but that's okay because it's pretty yummy.

I don't like Magnolia, either; something about the frosting makes me feel sick. Blah. My mom used to go to a good bakery called Europa, and they had great cupcakes, but I think it is closed now.
Amy - totally made cupcakes from a mix with canned frosting last night for the dorm and maybe ate two or three spoonfuls of frosting on my own.
